Local Attractions Lydford is a ancient settlement, once a thriving medieval town with a mint and a castle, but now a peaceful Devon village on the western slopes of Dartmoor. The remains of the Norman castle can be explored and a short walk from the village is the entrance to Lydford Gorge (National Trust), where the river Lyd drops in a series of falls, pools and pot holes into a deep chasm, which then broadens into a pretty wooded valley. Near the far end of the gorge a small stream cascades down the White Lady waterfall into a deep pool. A little further away stands the rocky outcrop of Brentor, surmounted by the 13th century church of St Michael de Rupe - a short climb from the car park on the road at the bottom takes the visitor to a commanding panoramic view across west Devon and north Cornwall.
Dartmoor provides miles of open upland moorland. rocky tors and tumbling streams, quiet villages and country inns for the walker or rider to explore. The market towns of Tavistock and Okehampton provide shopping and leisure facilities.
The north and south coasts of Devon and Cornwall are within 45 minutes drive, and for those wishing to explore further afield, the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan and a host of National Trust houses and gardens are easily reached by road. Several cycle routes pass close through or close to Lydford. The minig heritage centre at Morwellham, on the Tamar and the city of Plymouth are linked by cycle routes. Eating Out
